Recently, we asked Amy Koch, Executive Director at the Charles Ford Retirement Communities, to review for us the options available for those who might be considering a move to the Charles Ford Retirement Communities in New Harmony. We wanted to understand better what to expect when transitioning from living independently at home, to living in an assisted living residential community. We were particularly interested in learning whether or not the opportunity would exist to make the move on a temporary basis rather than making it a long-term choice. Koch explained that option is available and sometimes referred to as respite care and short-term stays are an option offered to meet an individual’s need.
“Face it,” she said, “for most individuals who are blessed with long life, the aging process eventually affects their ability to live alone at home. We understand why people want to stay in their residences as long as possible, but for many, a transition into assisted living adds immensely to their quality of life. More often than not, it’s better for an individual to make the move before a health emergency occurs, and since it can be a difficult decision, some people want to try us out,” Koch said, “before they sell their home and make the move, permanently. We understand that desire and are happy to accommodate that request.“
When new residents arrive, the Charles Ford staff embraces each one by forming an intricate network to address their needs and desires. “Because we are a small, intimate community, staffed essentially, on a one-to-one basis, we’re able to provide customized, loving care that is constant, yet evolves and adjusts over time to the dynamic changes that take place in the life of each resident.” Koch explained, “Our care team consists of RNs, LPNs, and Resident Assistants, cross-trained through all departments to enable them to respond to each individual’s needs with detailed attention. Our Medical Director supports this overall approach by working with the resident’s personal physician or physician specialist to ensure all medical needs are addressed.”
”In addition to providing attention to your health, we clean your room, provide your meals to order, shop for essentials, transport you to scheduled appointments, arrange fun activities, plan special occasions, and engage in entertainment, and assist with personal care. What more would you want?” Koch asked. “And, there are many reasons family members gain peace of mind when seniors move into our facility. Above all, they are assured their loved ones are safe and getting excellent care, Koch said.”
Combined with spa-like amenities, including a beauty/barber shop and a fitness center, the suggestion is there’s nowhere else you could live more comfortably any time of the year, but especially for a respite during winter when the air is freezing and the snow falls.
